Illustration highlighting girl power and the gender revolution Illustration celebrating diversity in pop music, symbolized by a variety of instruments and recording equipment

I created a series of editorial illustrations for a German online radio long-read examining gender inequality and power structures in the music industry. It explores how women and gender-diverse people experience the music industry and how cultural structures still favour white, male, and heteronormative models — despite the diversity of artists and scenes.

The article investigates not just who performs on stage, but who has power behind the scenes — in festivals, music labels, production, and journalism — and what structural barriers exist for people outside the dominant stereotypes.

Franz Hessel’s „Der älteste Bruder“ (The Eldest Brother) follows the eldest sibling, weighed down by duty and unable to accept help, while the youngest moves through challenges easily, humble and unassuming. Through fairy-tale symbolism, the poem explores sacrifice, opportunity, and the contrasting roles that shape family dynamics — roles that seem to feel inevitable.

My illustrations highlight the crucial role of animals in the three-brother tales found throughout the Grimm Brothers’ collection, guiding, assisting, or revealing disguised figures of power.

Beyond hand-drawn illustrations, I create across a spectrum of media — from vector graphics and collage art to animation and experimental techniques — adapting each approach to suit the story and connect with its audience.
